Paulo H. S. Paioti

Paulo was born in the state of São Paulo, in Brazil, in 1987. He graduated with BSc and MSc degrees in Chemistry at University of Campinas, where he worked with Professor Fernando Coelho and completed the total synthesis of Leiocarpin A, a biologically active and naturally-occurring styryl lactone. For his PhD studies, he moved to University of Florida and completed his doctoral training under the mentorship of Professor Aaron Aponick in 2016. In the Aponick group, Paulo developed catalytic synthesis of spiroketals from alkynes and enantioselective alkyne additions to iminium ions. The latter work resulted in the development of StackPhim, an atropisomeric P,N-based ligand which is state-of-the-art in several catalytic enantioselective reactions. In 2017, he started his postdoctoral training in the group of Professor Amir H. Hoveyda at Boston College, and in 2019 moved to University of Strasbourg where he helped to launch a new branch of the Hoveyda research group. Apart from work on catalytic enantioselective processes, in the Hoveyda group Paulo developed a catalytic click reaction that generates modifiable linkers and is orthogonal to CuAAC and SuFEx. The process has been named Cu-catalyzed phenoxydiazaborinine formation (CuPDF). In 2023, Paulo started an appointment as group leader at IOCB Prague, where he will continue to develop catalysts, methods and mechanistic studies to address shortcomings in the synthesis of complex bioactive molecules.
